Post Backpacking Budget?!?! mexico/guatemala

so i would like some ideas for my budget.
$40 a day-both mexico + guatemala
3 months = $3600 (food,rooms)
transportation = $700
park fees=$300
Plane ticket = 1,000-2,000
which means the whole trip would be $6,400.

Am i giving myself enough wiggle room or?
I would be staying in hostels, and backpacking hardcore. haha

I'd say that should be OK - Guatemala and south mexico are both very cheap ($5-$15 per night accom) but if you want to go to tulum side or intend to stay around mexico city for long then i'd have a bit more. Food is very cheap if you are not too fussy. The main "activities" in that area are also pretty cheap really, no big expenses that i can recall.

If you run out of money then just head for Lago de Atilan, we stayed in a nice room there for two weeks that was $3.50 per night.

Having said that, i'd probably spend it all in the first week and so don't listen to me!
