Tax is a bastard in Oz......i was told that if you stay in one place for 6 months or more you are classed as a resident for tax purposes and you are entitled to claim back any tax that you incur while working in Oz. I lived in Melbourne for 6 months and worked for Victoria Police for 3 months, paying over $1,600 in tax.......after claiming back my tax when i was back in the UK i received a cheque for $16!!!!
Can anyone confirm that i was correct in my previous thoughts?? $1,600AUD would come in handy right now! |

Hi Jaime,
Tax is a nightmare what ever country your in. The best thing that I can suggest is that you visit the Australian Tax office for 100% accurate info www.ato.gov.au. I have however copied this which I hope you find of some use? "Your tax depends on how much you earn, whether you have a tax file number and give it to your employer, and whether you are a resident for tax purposes. If you start work before getting your tax file number, you have 28 days to give it to your employer. During this time you will be taxed at non-resident rates. If, after that, you haven’t given your employer your tax file number, they must take the maximum amount of tax from your pay. Employers send the tax they withhold from your pay to the Tax Office on a regular basis. When you lodge your tax return, we will give you a credit for this withheld tax." In short it says you can claim part of this tax back but not the total amount, your tax rate is determined upon your earnings with a minimum fixed fee and ever increasing scale. Non-residents If you are a non-resident for the full year, the following rates apply: Tax rates 2005-06 Taxable income Tax on this income $0 – $21,600 29c for each $1 $21,601 – $63,000 $6,264 plus 30c for each $1 over $21,600 $63,001 – $95,000 $18,684 plus 42c for each $1 over $63,000 Over $95,000 $32,124 plus 47c for each $1 over $95,000 Tax rates 2006-07 Taxable income Tax on this income $0 – $25,000 29c for each $1 $25,001 – $75,000 $7,250 plus 30c for each $1 over $25,000 $75,001 – $150,000 $22,250 plus 40c for each $1 over $75,000 Over $150,000 $52,250 plus 45c for each $1 over $150,000 Non-residents are not required to pay the Medicare levy. I hope this is of some use Mark H Last edited by Markvisasaustralia : 08-03-2007 at 02:05 PM. |

Hey.
You can claim your tax back for your work in Aus... We did this as soon as we got here. The person who my boyf stayed with three years ago kept his Group Certificate (bit like a p60) and said we could claim his tax back. We went to the ATO and spoke to someone there (could use a nasty word but wont We booked an appointment with an accountant and within two weeks we had our tax back. Boyf earnt about $14,000 over his WHV period and got $3500 back in our pocket. Lovely to receive when we had just arrived this time with not much money in our back pocket! So dont listen to the ATO when they say you are not entitled to it back! Also regarding your TFN, all you do when you get here is go to an ATO office (they are all over the place), line up, tell them you are on a WHV and you need a TFN, they show you to a pc, you complete the online form and within two weeks you have your TFN. Easy as that. Hope that all helps. Any questions let me know. Forgot to add, dont forget to give your employer/'s a forwarding address when you leave them so they can send on your Group Certificate to be able to claim your tax back....
